College Admissions Isn’t Harder—It’s Just More Crowded

When I sit down with families (and I’ve done this thousands of times since founding Your College Concierge in 2007 ), I ask students a simple question:

“What do you do with your free time?”

That’s where the story begins.
Because colleges aren’t just admitting students…they’re building a class. A community. A group of individuals who bring curiosity, initiative, and perspective.

They want to know:

  • What does this student care about?
  • How do they spend unstructured time?
  • What have they chosen to pursue?

Myth v Reality in College Admissions
The narrative that “college admissions has become impossibly selective” is only partially true.

Yes, admit rates at brand-name schools are very low. Yes, students today are more accomplished than ever. But the real story, the one driving anxiety in households across the country, is this:

Applications are up 54% over the past decade… while actual college enrollment has declined.

Pause on that for a moment.

More students are applying to more schools (often 15, 20, even 25), while fewer are enrolling. The result? A surge of applications that makes colleges appear more selective than they actually are.

Here’s an interesting truth: Parents think, “My child needs perfect grades and test scores to compete…”

But at selective colleges, almost every applicant already has strong grades and impressive scores.

Admissions officers aren’t debating between a 3.9 and a 4.0 GPA. They’re not losing sleep over a 1520 vs. a 1560 SAT.

Exceptional grades and scores are baseline credentials now. The price of entry at the elite universities.

So the real question becomes: What actually differentiates one student from another?

Summer: The Hidden Differentiator

During the school year, much of a student’s life is structured. But summer?

Summer is where choice lives.

And that’s why meaningful summer experiences have quietly become one of the most powerful differentiators in today’s admissions process. Not résumé padding. Not random programs. Real experiences that create:

  • Stories
  • Growth
  • Direction

A part-time job. A passion project. Volunteering. Research. Starting something from scratch.
What matters is ownership.

Stories Signal Maturity

Here’s what many families miss:
Admissions officers are not just evaluating what you did…they’re evaluating how you think about what you did. Again, I tell students all the time: “Everyone does something. One kid is an extremely talented actress, another is a state debate champion, a third student made all-state as a viola player, a fourth student is class president and started a business. These are all impressive kids, but a key differentiator in the application is the ability to explain why you continue to perform. What motivates you.

A student who can clearly explain:

  • What they learned
  • Where they struggled
  • How they grew

…signals maturity.

Full stop.

I’ve seen students with slightly lower stats outperform higher-scoring peers in the admissions process because they brought something more compelling: self-awareness and perspective.

Don’t Leave Summer to Chance

And this is where most families make a critical mistake…
They wait too long to think about summer.
By the time spring rolls around, the best opportunities are filled, deadlines have passed, and decisions get rushed.
Summer becomes reactive instead of strategic.
If there’s one takeaway here, it’s this:
Summer doesn’t just “happen.” It should be planned.

Final Thought

College admissions today is a lot like March Madness. There are more qualified applicants than available spots. Outcomes can feel unpredictable. And small differences—the intangibles—can make all the difference.

In a world where everyone looks strong on paper, the student with the best story, and the growth behind it, stands out.
