Thriving Through College: 5 Essential Habits for Health and Success

Entering college is an exhilarating experience with newly gained independence and exciting opportunities. However, among the chaos of extracurricular activities, social events, and schoolwork, it can also be a time when health and wellness become less of a priority. It’s crucial to build healthy habits so that you can maintain a healthy lifestyle for both academic success and overall well-being throughout your entire college journey.

Habit #1: SLEEP

One of the most common pitfalls for college students is sacrificing sleep in favor of late-night studying or socializing. However, adequate sleep is essential for cognitive function, memory, and overall health. Students should aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night.  Quality of sleep is greatly affected by alcohol and caffeine consumption.  Limit both and try to maintain a regular sleep schedule. Ear plugs and a sleep mask can come in handy if you will have a roommate.

Habit #2: EAT HEALTHY BALANCED MEALS

The infamous “freshman fifteen” is often a result of poor dietary choices and irregular eating habits. To fuel your body and mind effectively, prioritize a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Seek out nutritious options in the dining hall or consider cooking simple meals in your dorm or apartment to avoid excessive reliance on fast food.  Also keep on hand healthy snack options for late nights and study breaks – protein bars, healthy popcorn, fruit, etc.

Habit #3: DRINK WATER

Proper hydration is essential for maintaining energy levels, concentration, and overall health. Carry a reusable water bottle with you throughout the day and aim to drink at least 8-10 cups of water daily. Limit your intake of sugary beverages and caffeinated drinks such as soda, coffee and energy drinks, as they can be full of empty calories, cause serious health problems and lead to dehydration.

Habit #4: MOVE YOUR BODY!

Regular exercise not only helps manage stress and improve mood but also enhances cognitive function and boosts productivity. Find physical activities that you enjoy so that you will stick to it.  Whether it’s joining a sports team, attending group fitness classes, or simply taking walks around campus, aim for at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity exercise.  Also, incorporate strength training exercises to improve muscular health.  Schedule exercise into your daily routine.  Stay active!!

Habit #5: MANAGE STRESS

College life can be demanding.  Academic pressures, extracurricular commitments, and social expectations all contribute to stress. Developing healthy coping mechanisms such as practicing mindfulness, deep breathing exercises, or engaging in hobbies that bring you joy can really contribute to balance in your life. Be sure to take breaks, spend time with supportive friends and reach out to loved ones if things get overwhelming.

Navigating the challenges of college life while prioritizing health and wellness requires intentional effort and self-discipline. But if you build healthy habits into your daily routine and seek support when needed, you can create a balanced lifestyle.  Make conscious choices that support your long-term goals and happiness.
